  • APPLEGATE & COMPANY CELEBRATES 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
    February 8, 2003

Suzy's early performing career included appearances with a group from Peoria known as Applegate&Company.  This group of very talented musicians appeared with Suzy on a local PBS produced special in the early 80's entitled Reflections. The show was filmed before an live audience at a place called The Distillery.  The show was a wonderful mix of acoustic music and harmony vocals.  Suzy's appearances with Applegate&Company included a number of folksy songs as well as some Suzy still performs today.  Suzy's version of Night Rider's Lament is one such song.

One of Suzy's earliest recordings was singing backup vocals on Bob Applegate's album of 1979 entitled Satisfied Mind.  Bob Applegate and another member of the band at the time, Mitch Corbin, played on Suzy's first record which she produced herself in 1981 and sold at her shows.

Applegate&Company is still playing in the Peoria Area and celebrate their 30th anniversary this month. Today Applegate&Company consists of Bob Applegate, Bill Harlan, Rich Mitts, and Steve Hatfield. The first three were seen with Suzy on the Reflections show. The group still enjoys performing together in and around Peoria.

SUZY TO REPRESENT U.S. AT MUSIC FESTIVAL
    May 8, 2003
May 18,2003 Tennesean story link added

Suzy will travel to Krakow, Poland later this month to represent the United States in the International Music Festival in honor of Bulat Okudzhava and his music.

During the period of the Soviet domination of the Eastern Block, music played an important unsanctioned role - keeping up the spirits of the people during some of the darkest periods in that region's history.  Bulat Okudzhava was perhaps the most famous of the singer/songwriter/poets whose music spread throughout the Soviet Union via underground sources, capturing the hearts of the people with simple folk songs whose lyrics packed a punch, loaded with double meanings. He was jailed frequently, yet would return to his calling, each time with new songs to sing. Okudzhava lived to see the crumbling of the Soviet Union, dying in 1997.

In recognition of the power of music to raise the spirits and hopes of downtrodden peoples everywhere, and in honor of this humble, soft-spoken man of music and hope, the First International Bulat Okudzhava Festival was held in Moscow in 2001, with artists from different nations singing Okudzhava songs in their native languages. The event was televised live in Russia, and later seen by millions of viewers throughout the former Soviet Union and the Far East.

The Second International Bulat Okudzhava Festival will be held on May 24, 2003 in Krakow, Poland, one of the beautiful old cities - and cultural centers - of Europe.  Among the nations participating this year are Japan, the Czech Republic, Romania, Netherlands, Italy, Russia and the United States, as well as the host country Poland.  The President of Poland, Mr. Kvasncvski, as well as cultural, economic and political leaders from many nations will attend the evening's gala event. The program will be televised live in Poland, and aired on the anniversary of Okudzhava's death  (June 12) throughout the former Soviet Union and the Far East."

The Festival's U.S. representative is Judy Massa, former Music Director of the Washington-based international broadcasting network Voice of America. Ms. Massa extended the invitation to represent the USA at this important international event to Suzy Bogguss, stating "Suzy's engaging voice, her captivating stage presence and her warm personality make her the perfect representative for our nation. They'll love her over there!"

SUZY BOGGUSS: A NEW LABEL, A NEW ALBUM…
    Press Release: April 9, 2003
    April 16, 2003

SWING CO-PRODUCED BY AND FEATURES RAY BENSON OF ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL, SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 17 RELEASE ON COMPADRE RECORDS

HOUSTON, Texas -- Suzy Bogguss has signed with Compadre Records (distributed by RED, marketed by Emergent) and has completed her first new album in three years, Swing, which will hit the streets on June 17. The album, which is co-produced by Bogguss with Asleep At The Wheel frontman Ray Benson, marks a musical departure for Bogguss with its Western swing and traditional jazz inflections.

In addition to Benson's instinctive guitar playing, the album features present members of Asleep At The Wheel (Jason Roberts, fiddle; David Sanger, drums) and past members (Floyd Domino, piano; Spencer Starnes, bass and John Mills, sax and clarinet.) The project was recorded at Benson's Bismeaux Studio inAustin, Texas.

The album showcases Suzy's flawless vocals on a variety of songs by writers including Duke Ellington ("Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me"), Nat King Cole ("Straighten Up And Fly Right"), and a couple of classics best known from recordings by Billie Holiday and Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, ("Comes Love" and "Sweetheart" respectively.) The collection also contains two new classics written by Paul Kramer, a veteran of Bogguss' band, plus a co-write by Kramer and Bogguss, along with five new songs by   burgeoning Nashville singer/songwriter, April Barrows. Bogguss became aware of Barrows while recording her much-acclaimed Christmas album in 2000. Session musician David Hungate made the introduction when he learned that Bogguss was gravitating to a swing sound for her next album.

The production partnership with Benson came about as a result of a more unusual story. Bogguss dreamt that she and Asleep At The Wheel took a madcap tour bus ride together on the way to the Grammys. Upon awakening, it became evident to her that she needed to make a record with long-time friend, Benson. She called him and the project became a reality.

Suzy recalls, "I originally envisioned this as a duet album with 'The Wheel', but after hearing April's songs, Ray and I decided that this needed to be a singer's album."

According to Compadre Records president Brad Turcotte, "Suzy has recorded a beautiful record and it hurts none that she is one of the most talented people that I have ever met."

"I looked around a long time for a label that did things a little differently," says Suzy. "I'm really excited about working with Compadre because of their fresh perspective on the business along with their passion for the music."

    ABOUT COMPADRE RECORDS
Houston- and Nashville-based Compadre Records was created to promote roots music. Its artists include Suzy Bogguss, Billy Joe Shaver (whose Compadre album sat atop the Americana Airplay Chart for eight weeks), Townes Van Zandt, Gary P. Nunn, Mike McClure and Billy Ray Reynolds. Compadre's principals include Brad Turcotte and Logan Rogers.

"I don't like hot dogs and I don't like anchovies. I don't like people who say there are too many guitar players in the world, and I especially don't like singers who sneak up on their notes. But I like Suzy Bogguss... she is always in the tone center, her voice sparkles like crystal water and she ain't all that bad looking boys and girls -- she's only one of the best."

    Article about this years event:

    From Suzy 2/5/2003:
We just returned from Country In The Rockies. It was amazing as always. Lots of big names this year; Lonestar, Brooks And Dunn, Jo Dee Messina, Gary Morris, Blackhawk, Billy Dean, Lari White, Mandy Barnett, Anthony Smith - it goes on and on. I'm saving the best for last...

I got to sit in for Heidi with Trick Pony while she's recuperating from vocal surgery. What a hoot - long blond wig and all. Check out Country Weekly, I'm sure they got some fun shots. I had to borrow clothes from Deborah Allen since I had cowgirl ski clothes with me and I needed Heidi's trademark sexy threads. I'm such a name dropper. Anyway, our bar won the bar tending competition. Billy, Trick Pony, Lari White, Chuck Cannon, Marve Green and me - woo hoo! We rocked Crested Butte! Of course, all the money we raised goes to cancer research at Vanderbilt so we are grateful to the folks who pledged all that money. Yeah.

Hope you are all having a good start to 2003.

    Love,
    Suzy
